Learn how to export a DXF file from your Fusion 360 Drawing. DXF stands for Drawing Interchange Format and is amon 2D and 3D file type used by CAD packages. DXF files work well with laser cutters as each Laser or CNC machine can read the 2D path, which it then follows as it fires the laser.

Export a DXF from a Fusion 360 Sketch (learn how in our previous lesson) or a Fusion 360 Drawing. There are pros and cons to each method, which we discuss throughout this lesson. Note that exporting a DWG file for laser cutters is not rmended. DWG is proprietary and includes many different versions, making it prone to cause errors with different software packages.

Learn how to prepare your Fusion 360 file for laser cutting. This includes how to check your units of measure and scale, how to Project your edges or contour into a single sketch, and additional considerations when preparing files for laser cutters.

Fusion 360 allows the export as a DXF file, which makes it the perfect CAD program to use for laser cutters. Go from 3-dimensional objects to 2D contours for laser cutting. In this lesson, learn how to Project the edges of 3D bodies into a single sketch. The Sketch is then used to create DXF files, which is the 5th video in this laser cutting series.

Check out the next video in this series, where I demo how to prepare your TEXT for the Laser Cutter using Fusion 360.

Learn how to prepare your text for laser cutting using Fusion 360’s sketch features. In this lesson, we’ll discuss “bridging” the areas of negative space. We’ll discuss when and how to break the “Projection Link” of the projected contours.

Fusion 360’s Sketch environment allows you to sketch 2-dimensional objects before turning them into 3D objects or using the 2D file for unique workflows, including laser cutters. The Textmand in Fusion 360 can be utilized as a starting point to creating text for a laser cutter. Once the text is placed in your design, you’ll want to join negative spaces with the rest of the contours.

Check out the next video in this series, where I demo how to export your Fusion 360 sketch as a DXF file.
